Walking Rugby launching at Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre

Walking rugby sessions are starting at Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre from Tuesday, 2 May.

Wiltshire Council is currently working in partnership with Salisbury Rugby Club to deliver walking rugby, a non-contact version of the traditional game at walking pace, making sessions more accessible and creating a fun and social sporting opportunity.

It is suitable for adults of all ages and abilities including individuals who have stopped playing due to injury, those who have never played the game or older people looking to increase their activity levels. Sessions also provide a great way to socialise with other like-minded individuals and to meet new friends while also offering participants the opportunity to be physically active and improve their health and fitness.

Sessions cost £3 each and will take place in the sports hall at Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre on Tuesdays from 11am to 12pm from 2 May. Participants will also be encouraged to join the group for a cup of tea and catch up afterwards.

Carolyn Godfrey, corporate director at Wiltshire Council said: “This is an innovative new sport which encourages people to be more physically active in a friendly environment. I would urge anyone thinking about taking part to get involved, as it benefits their health and wellbeing and is fun too.”

Pat Clash, director of Salisbury Rugby Club and organiser of the walking rugby sessions said: “As the name suggests, there is no running in walking rugby making it ideal for all age groups, ladies as well as men and those in the later stages of recovery from injuries. It is great fun with none of the rough and tumble the 15 aside game is renowned for. It’s a case of try it and see – anyone who does won’t be disappointed.”
