Young at higher risk of asthma attacks

The charity Asthma UK has warned that young people are at a higher risk of having an asthma attack than any other age group with the condition.

The findings come from a poll of more than 10,000  people with asthma, the poll also found that young people are twice as likely as people over the age of 60 to need emergency care due to asthma-related problems.

According to the charity, the survey also found that young people were not getting basic asthma care. The basic care includes having a written action plan, an annual review and an inhaler technique check. Asthma UK suggests that reasons for younger generations to suffer more with their asthma include complacency around the seriousness of the condition and the difficulties in getting GP appointments. Answers to the survey showed that some didn’t receive reminders that their review was due while others said that their GP surgery was too busy, so were unable to book a review. There were also instances of people not attending their reviews.
