Wiltshire Council youth project wins national award

Wiltshire StreetGames won an award for ‘Sustainability’ at the StreetGames National Awards held in Kenilworth on 4 June 2019.

The initiative, which delivers community-based sports activities, events and volunteering opportunities to young people across Wiltshire, is in its eleventh year.

StreetGames are a national charity who aim to improve the lives of young people from deprived neighbourhoods through the power of sport. Wiltshire Council’s sports development team are part of the charities network of organisations that deliver activities across the country.  Using an estate-based delivery model, a range of projects under the umbrella of Wiltshire StreetGames have been delivered since 2009 including Doorstep Sports Clubs, Fit and Fed, Club 1, ParkLives, the Wiltshire Skate Series and the Young Volunteer Academy.

Jerry Kunkler, portfolio holder for leisure said: “Over the past 11 years hundreds of young people from across Wiltshire have benefited from StreetGames initiatives. I would encourage all young people to get involved with StreetGames as the health and social benefits are huge.”

Sarah Mortiboys, Sport for Development Coalition Manager and Sponsors of the Award said “Being sustainable in our sector is vital to ensure long term impact. Wiltshire StreetGames have this in spades; working with creativity to ensure that they continue to deliver for the young people within their locality. Big congratulations from the Coalition on this year’s Sustainability Award.”

The learning Wiltshire Council has undertaken through StreetGames and the estate-based approach has enabled funding to be secured from Sport England to broaden the Council’s offer to disadvantaged residents; this in turn will see more residents across the County taking part in sport, physical activity and lead a healthier lifestyle by staying active.
