Wiltshire Council supporting communities at this unprecedented time

Wiltshire Council is working hard to support communities as much as possible during the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

Volunteer groups are being set-up throughout the county and Wiltshire Council is linking with as many as possible to see if they need additional support, guidance or resources.

The majority of groups being set-up by volunteers are to ensure their fellow residents, vulnerable neighbours and family have all the support they need following the government’s latest advice regarding social distancing and self-isolation.

To help understand how many groups have been set-up and the support they are providing, the council has put together a short survey to capture the relevant information, which will give them a good understanding of the great working taking place. The survey can be found at https://app.sli.do/event/mhop2vsw/live/polls.

With many major supermarkets opening early specifically for elderly and vulnerable people, Wiltshire Council has also relaxed its bus pass concession terms, meaning people with a bus pass can now use them before 9:30am until further notice, giving them the best opportunity to ensure they can get everything they need. People are advised to keep checking timetables in case there are any changes made as a result of the ongoing situation.

The council has also been supporting schools and ensuring the vulnerable continue to get care and support during this fast-developing time.

Wiltshire Council Leader, Cllr Philip Whitehead, said: “We have been humbled, but not surprised, to see Wiltshire communities coming together at this exceptional time to support their fellow neighbours and residents. It just goes to show how resilient our communities are when faced with such an unprecedented challenge.

“We will do what we can to support these groups and ensure they have what they need to be as effective as possible. Many groups might not even require our help, but we want them to know we are with them every step of the way.”
