Street Library to reopen in new location

Street Library will reopen its doors to the public in new location Street Parish Rooms on Wednesday 29 May at 9.30am.

A temporary agreement was put in place at the end of April between Street Parish Council, the Friends of Street Library group and Somerset County Council to jointly run the library together, pending the development of a longer-term plan which will secure the long-term future of a library in Street.

Discussions are continuing at pace, and Street Library will move to its new agreed location in Street Parish Rooms, Leigh Road, from 29 May. There will be no changes to current opening hours of Street Library and library staff will be on hand to provide support and assistance.

Claire Axten, Chair of Friends of Street Library said: “We are delighted that Street Library is alive and well, and ready to open again so soon.  The Friends are working hard to support the Library with activities and fundraising.  The book groups are continuing and we are now preparing for the Summer Reading Challenge; the theme this year is Space!  We will continue to hold our popular children’s sessions during holidays.  So come along and support your library when it reopens on 29th May!”

Nina Swift, Chair of Street Parish Council said: “’Street Library is threatened by closure’ – those words were devastating. A huge number of Street people decided this should not happen and a dedicated band of people have worked hard to prevent it. I’m very pleased Street will continue to have a full library service.”

Oliver Woodhams, Strategic Manager of the Libraries Service at Somerset County Council, said: “We are delighted to have taken another step forward in securing the long-term future of Street Library and have worked hard with partners to create a new space in the Parish Rooms for the community to use.  We’d like to thank Street Parish Council and the Friends of Street Library for making this happen – it has been a real pleasure to work with our partners in getting to this point.  In due course, I hope we will be able to celebrate the opening of a new permanent library facility in Street.”
