Standard of education is improving

The standard of education at Hanham Woods Academy is improving say Ofsted inspectors.
The school was inspected last month and the report said the academy was taking effective action in its efforts to come out of special measures.
Last autumn, the school was rated as Inadequate in all key areas with Ofsted critical of leadership and management as well as of the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, personal development, behaviour and welfare and outcome for pupils.

Among the issues highlighted at the time were that pupils had underachieved across a range of subjects for too long, teachers didn’t have high expectations and teaching was often poorly planned with pupil attendance remaining below the average.
The report from the recent visit found that middle and senior leadership had improved, as had communication between the school and parents. The academy’s new model of learning and teaching had received approval and behaviour and attendance had improved.
The whole school has put forward a school-wide approach to tackle the problems and raise the low standards of literacy at Hanham Woods has been developed and is in place, however, it was found that teachers are not implementing it with any consistency.
In a letter to parents, headteacher Steve Kneller said the latest report was the result of hard work from students and staff.
