Six sizzling summer activities!

Six sizzling summer activities!

If you’re looking for things to do as a family over the summer holiday that won’t break the bank and will still keep your kids engaged and entertained, take a look at some of these suggestions.

  1. Create an obstacle course
Use whatever you have around the home including toys, chairs and anything else that comes to mind. Supervise the kids in constructing the course and then challenge them to see who can complete it – it’s a great way to spend some time together and you can even make a game out of tidying up again afterwards!
  2. Make your own nature documentary
If you have the next David Attenborough on your hands or just kids you want to get away from a screen for a few hours why not suggest making your own nature documentary. Whether you have a smart phone or an old camera lying around, take them to a local nature reserve or just out and about in your local area and have them take photos of things that interest them such as birds, cloud formations or pretty flowers. You can then work with them to put the pictures together and create a little documentary that they can then show their friends and other family members.
  3. Put on a play
Are your kids taking part in the summer reading challenge through the library? If so, get them to re-enact their favourite moments from the books they have read recently. It will get them thinking and giving them the chance to dress up in costumes and perform for you will also let their creativity flow a bit. It’s a good one for if the weather takes a turn.
  4. Go on a bug hunt
If the weather is nice and your little ones like being outdoors, take them on a bug hunt. This could be around your back garden or a nearby green space – whatever best suits you. You can see what insects you can find in the grass and then see if you can identify them.
  5. Make your own ice lollies
Ice lollies are super easy to make and by making your own, you can fully customise them and have them on hand for when the warm weather strikes! One really easy way to make ice lollies is just to put a stick or skewer through slices of tinned pineapple and then popping them on a tray in the freezer until frozen. Simple!
  6. Do a spot of gardening
Whether you have a garden or just a few windowsills and some pots keeping the kids entertained with some planting and gardening is easy. Besides, how many kids do you know that don’t love getting soil everywhere?! If you have a garden, mark out a little section that they can use to grow their own flowers or strawberries or allow them to customise their own plant pots and then pot them and watch their plants grow. You could even start from seeds and let them document the plant’s growth or create a haven for butterflies and bees by planting things like lavender and see how many you can attract over the summer.
