The number of children being taught in so called ‘super sized’ primary school classes has been revealed to be at its highest in a decade.
The figures published by the Department of Education have shown that more than one in ten pupils are taught in classes of 31 or more, the largest proportion since 2007.
Primary School class sizes have been under pressure recently following a boom in pupil numbers, thought to be caused partly by a rise in the birth rate.
These larger classes are operating outside the law, as there is a statutory limit on class sizes for children aged between 4 and 7, though there is no formal class size for those aged seven to eleven, however, a class of over 30 is well above the average size.
