Road safety programme helping young people Learn 2 Live

A targeted road safety programme to help keep younger drivers and passengers safe is being rolled out by Somerset County Council’s road safety team.

Recent stats show that 20 per cent of road casualties in Somerset involve 16 to 24-year-olds – despite this age group making up just 9 per cent of the total population.

Somerset Road Safety has been working closely with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Bridgwater and Taunton College to develop Learn 2 Live – an initiative which runs successfully in Devon and Cornwall.

Their Learn 2 Live (L2L) sessions have been presented in large theatre type productions to large numbers of students.

Somerset Road Safety’s format uses the successful L2L brand but is designed for smaller groups to allow discussions on various topics to highlight how to avoid being involved in a collision.

Since October, the team have already delivered L2L to more than 2,700 students in Somerset, with further dates planned at Huish Episcopi and Yeovil College.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet member for Highways, said: “The Learn 2 Live platform has been extremely successful in helping young people understand the risks of driving so they can consider the consequences of their actions.

“We are pleased to have worked with our partners to introduce a new version which is proving really engaging with young people and will now be part of the road safety delivery we offer to schools and colleges.”

Claire Hill from Richard Huish College said: “We all found the presentation very hard-hitting, especially towards the end and we all agree that the message was delivered very well.

“One student said that although it was upsetting it ‘really made you think about the consequences and how everyone should take responsibility when entering a car.

“We have already enquired about a booking for next year’s students because of the positive impact it made on us all. Thank you.”
