Refurbished facilities at Keynsham Leisure Centre to be officially opened

The first phase of the £11 million refurbishment of Keynsham Leisure Centre has been completed

The new ground floor fitness suite, studios, changing facilities, soft play and café will be open to the public from Monday 17 June and will be officially opened on Thursday 27 June by Councillor Dine Romero, Bath & North East Somerset Council Leader and Councillor Paul Crossley, Cabinet member for Community Services

Work to transform the ageing building into a more modern and welcoming centre began in May last year.  The project is being delivered by Bath & North East Somerset Council though its contractor Kier, in partnership with GLL, who operate and manage the leisure centre on behalf of the council under the Better brand.

The squash courts and sports hall have already been refurbished and by the autumn the leisure centre will also boast a new teaching pool and refurbished main pool hall.

The council secured £500,000 of funding towards the project from the National Lottery through a bid to the Strategic Facilities Fund which is administered by Sport England.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has been working closely with Sport England to ensure the project suits its national aims of providing accessible leisure facilities that encourage people to live active lives.

Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services said: “We want to encourage people to get active more often as it has many benefits, both physically and mentally.  To do that we need to provide modern welcoming facilities that people want to use while reducing subsidies and costs. Keynsham Leisure Centre has long been in need of updating so before work began local people were asked what they’d like to see there. Their views helped shape the refurbishment of the centre and the fantastic new facilities are now fit to meet the needs of the community well into the future.”

The refurbishment of Keynsham Leisure Centre forms part of the council’s continued investment in improving leisure facilities across the district to help support delivery of its ambitious Fit for Life strategy, which is designed to improve the health and well-being of everyone in the area, now and into the future. Its aim is to motivate more people to get more active more often, especially families, young people, older people and those who are overweight and find ways to make physical activity more central to people’s lives.

The innovative partnership with GLL has already delivered new facilities at Bath Sport and Leisure Centre which now boasts a new trampoline park, learner pool, soft play, changing facilities, reception areas, cafe and 10-pin bowling; and seen a dramatic increase in the number of people getting active across Bath and North East Somerset.

Justine Foster, GLL Partnership Manager Bath and North East Somerset, said:  “We are really excited to be opening another new facility in partnership with Bath & North East Somerset Council – the new facilities look great and we are sure that the centre will be popular and continue to deliver the health and well-being agenda within the town and the surrounding areas.”

Sport and physical activity can make a big contribution to Bath and North East Somerset’s economy, helping to boost local communities by bringing people together and reducing social isolation.

The refurbishment of Keynsham Leisure Centre is part of a package of measures introduced by the council to help regenerate the town, from the redevelopment of the old council offices into contemporary new homes, to changes to traffic routing in the town centre and plans for improvements to the public realm in the town.
