Outdoor Theatre Season at The Bishop’s Palace, Wells

July – August 2019

This Summer, let yourself be entertained in the picturesque surroundings of The Bishop’s Palace in Wells, with a choice of fabulous outdoor theatre performances.

Held on the South Lawn, with a backdrop of the 13th century ruins of the Great Hall, it’s the perfect combination for a memorable night out.

This year’s programme kicks off in July with a visit from Palace favourites The Pantaloons.  On 5th July they will bring their vibrant sense of fun to Jane Austen’s classic ‘Sense and Sensibility’.  This funny, fast-paced and faithful new adaptation from the critically-acclaimed Pantaloons Theatre Company features live music, audience interaction, romance and heartbreak.

Later in the month, on Sunday 28th July, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men present their authentic version of Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Celebrating 425 years since the original company was created, and the 15th birthday of the modern troupe, this brilliant company will perform Shakespeare as he intended it to be seen; all male, in the open air and in full Elizabethan costume with traditional music and dance. Enjoy this supernatural comedy of mischievous fairies, confused lovers and rude mechanicals in an intoxicating tale of clarity found from chaos, as tangled love gives way to happily ever afters!

On Sunday 4th August, Boxtree Productions bring ‘The Legend of King Arthur’ to the 13th century Palace in a match made in heaven of medieval folklore on the ancient isle of Avalon. Arthur discovers his prophecy; destined to pull the sword from the stone and unite Britain. With Merlin and his Knights by his side, will Arthur be able to reunite Britain and thwart the evil plans of Morgan le Fay? This production is suitable for all the family and includes original songs and magical storytelling to keep all ages entranced.

To finish the season, join Heartbreak Productions on Friday 16th August for an adaptation of Emily Bronte’s ‘Wuthering Heights’, a haunting tale of two restless souls as wild and untamed as the bleak Yorkshire moors.  A tale of love and passionate bonds; when the lovers are driven apart by Cathy’s ambition for social elevation, Heathcliff turns vengeful and sets out to enact a torturous scheme of revenge on the next generation of Earnshaws.

All productions begin at 6:30pm and audiences are invited to bring a picnic blanket or low-backed seating along with their own picnic and drinks. The performances will take place regardless of the weather, so do dress appropriately!
