Nearly 3 million children are in poverty says report

The latest figures published by the Department of Work and Pensions has revealed that a record 2.9 million children from working families in the UK are living in poverty after housing costs have been paid.

This means that 70% of all ‘poor’ children were from working families, which is up from 67% on last year. The age of children in poverty has also changed, with 53% of all children living in poverty aged under 5.

The figures show that the high cost of housing in the UK is pushing more and more working families over the poverty line. According to calculations by the National Housing Federation nearly a third of all children in the UK are living in poverty because of spiralling rents and mortgage costs. They are calling for the government to urgently invest more money in social housing.
The government have said that tackling poverty is a priority.
