Money saving tips for Christmas

Money saving tips for Christmas

For most of us, Christmas is the most expensive time of the year and with the current cost of living situation, it is more important than ever to be careful with how much we are spending.

Here are some suggestions on how to have a great Christmas without breaking the bank.

  • Instead of planning the perfect Christmas, plan one you can afford
Before you start deciding how many you plan to cook for and what gifts everyone wants, calculate how much you actually have to spend on the Big Day and plan around that. It might not be the Christmas you dreamed of, but it will feel pretty perfect when you’re not stressing over your bills come January.
  • Limit your Christmas list
We all know what it is like at the moment, so why not make a decision to create something hand made for some of the people on your list? Or instead of buying presents, promising to go on a day out or offering to babysit their kids or something. Gifts don’t have to be physical to mean something.
  • Take advantage of discounts
Make a list of who you want to buy for and then keep an eye out to see when those items go on sale. You can set up certain browser extensions like Honey or Karma that will notify you when things you’ve saved are discounted.
  • Don’t worry about buying the best for dinner
You don’t need to worry about buying the best cuts of meat or spending all your money on the turkey. Most of the time, you won’t notice lower priced goods, like buying a frozen cut of meat or choosing super market brands over more expensive options.
  • Book tickets in advance
If you are travelling to see friends and family this Christmas, book any tickets for the train or coach as early as possible to get the best deals.
  • Take advantage of supermarket stamp schemes
Some supermarkets operate a savings scheme where you buy a stamp every week and then at the end of the year, you have a book of stamps you can exchange for goods up to a certain value. It’s a great way of spreading the cost for Christmas dinner or gifts.
