Meet the team behind Frome Children’s Festival

From the makers of Frome Children’s Festival… Purple Elephant Productions!

Ever wondered what else the Frome Children’s Festival people do?
The company behind this amazing free event is called Purple Elephant Productions, a small non-profit making organisation based in Frome. Their mission is to support local families and create opportunities for everyone to enjoy together, irrespective of background and circumstances.

As well as running the annual Children’s Festival, Purple Elephant run other annual events including the Sports Festival – a week of free sports tasters for all ages – and their children’s Christmas party, which brings festive sparkle to families who often struggle at that time of year. Their year-round work includes family activities during school holidays, giving families something fun and creative to enjoy together at a very low cost, and the fabulous Toy Library – a lending service full of toys, games, books, dressing up clothes and themed play sacks, cutting costs for families and reducing waste. The Toy Library also runs twice weekly play and learn sessions where parents can dedicate time to their preschool children in a safe and nurturing environment.

Director, Sue Willis, explains: “We care passionately about our local community. Our work is all about supporting those who are most in need and helping to bring our community together. We want to offer opportunities for children that they might not otherwise be able to access, widening their life experiences and helping to break down social barriers to create more tolerance and respect.

“All our projects are either free or very low cost to attend. We take this approach to ensure that financial circumstances are not a barrier to families attending our activities. We also ensure that all venues we use are fully accessible; we have family support workers at all our holiday sessions; and have sensory toys at each activity. This helps to make our activities as accessible as possible for children with additional needs. We use various venues across town to bring activities onto the doorstep, within easy walking distance for families.

“As we derive very little income from our activities the majority of our work is grant funded. Grants are becoming harder to secure as competition increases so we’re looking to establish a more sustainable funding strategy with sponsors and donations playing an important part. If you’d like to support us we’d be very happy to hear from you.”

Purple Elephant’s next event will be Frome Children’s Festival. The event will be held on Sunday 23rd June from 11 am to 5 pm at the Cheese and Grain through to Welshmill Park. Entry is free and activities will include a zip wire across the river, BMX stunts on the pump track, theatre, dance, crafts, animals, face painting, graffiti, music workshops, dressing up, gaming and a sensory tent.
