Jubilee fun and celebrations in Bath and North East Somerset

Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum anniversary will be celebrated in true community style in Bath and North East Somerset with 53 street parties having been planned so far during the bank holiday weekend.

Bath & North East Somerset Council will be illuminating Bath Abbey, the Guildhall, the Roman Baths and Pulteney Bridge in purple from 10pm on Thursday, June 2 to mark the national lighting of the beacons.

St John’s Church in Keynsham and the Town Hall in Midsomer Norton will also be lit on that evening.

The Jubilee celebrations continue at the Big Jubilee Picnic on the Lower Lawn of the Royal Crescent in Bath on Saturday, June 5 which is being organised by the council.

The free event will see family friendly activities on offer including face painting, arts & crafts, Super Pirates and musical fun with Drum Runners.

Events taking place on Friday, June 3 include Peasedown Party in the Park at Beacon Field and Alice Park’s Party in the Park in Bath. In Midsomer Norton, there will be the Midsomer Jubilee Music Fest.

Midsomer Norton Town Council has events on each of the four days in the Midsomer Norton Jubilee Weekender.

In Keynsham the celebrations have already begun with a Jubilee Beacon Trail and a film project run by Keynsham Town Council as part of Keynsham’s Local Cultural Programme.

Councillor Dine Romero, cabinet member for Children and Young People, Communities and Culture, said: “The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations are already fostering a real sense of community spirit in Bath and North East Somerset. I’m pleased to hear so many neighbours will be joining together for a street party. There’s a lot of exciting events going on across the area to mark this moment in the history of our royal family so I’d encourage everyone to take part in an event near you.”

The free, augmented reality (AR) story trail in Keynsham lets families choose what happens in the story as they explore the town to find QR codes, allowing them to collect stamps, meet the characters as they come to life in AR, and learn about one of the decades of the Queen’s reign.

A film called Keynsham Jubilee Conversations with memories of royalty and Jubilee celebrations gone by is being put together using filming sessions being carried out in Keynsham Memorial Park with residents during May. The film will be screened at Keynsham Baptist Church as part of the Picnic in the Park on Friday, June 4.

Bands will play in park bandstands and at Parade Gardens, a planting display will form a Union Jack with the lettering ER 1952-2022. Planting in red, white and blue will also extend across Brock Street, Parade Gardens and Orange Grove.

Council libraries will hold special events including royal-themed story times and craft events with the libraries dressed like a street party. The mobile library will deliver activity packs to people not able to attend events in person. There will also be a ‘Big Jubilee Read’, celebrating 70 years of the Commonwealth with 70 books showing the diversity of communities. There will be digital celebrations, an online game with Colin the Corgi, and activities across the libraries’ social media channels and blog.

Fifty-six schools have taken part in the Queen’s Green Canopy, a national initiative to ‘plant a tree for the jubilee’ creating a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation. This has been extended in Bath and North East Somerset by the council offering all schools a tree.
