Holyrood Academy Media Day for new school build project

Holyrood Academy pupils experienced a specially coordinated media day on Tuesday (5 April) creating video and news content with construction company BAM  who are building an extension new build at the academy.

Year 7, 8 and 9 students were invited to apply for a place to create special video and news content and eleven students were selected.

Supported by Jess Morgan, Social Impact Manager from BAM Construct, along with Caitlin Webster, Apprentice Project Support Coordinator, who is working on the site, they filmed a short interview which will go on to be edited by the group and included in school and BAM social media.

Caitlin completed work experience with BAM during her time at school and was keen to share her passion for construction with the media students, helping them complete activities based around news story writing and filming a short video.

Caitlin, a level 4 apprentice, said “My experience of construction is that no two days are the same so you will never get bored. Working with BAM through Futures For Somerset on the Holyrood expansion project means that not only do I get to broaden my construction and management skills, I also get to do days like this with the media pupils and help them get as much from the experience of having a multi-national company working alongside their school day as possible.”

Social Impact Manager Jess Morgan said “BAM are committed to raising aspirations and inspiring the next generation to consider an exciting career in construction. Working with Futures for Somerset, it is fantastic to be working with the pupils from Holyrood Academy, ensuring that they are a part of their school build at every step of the way and engaging in activities that connect to STEM, future careers and essential skill building for the future world of work”

BAM Construct put aside 15% of their funding for the £5.5m project to embed social value into the building of the new Holyrood extension. Social value includes apprentice places, local sourcing and purchasing, and activities with community builds such as the Holyrood Media day to benefit the local area around environment, employment and wider community benefit.

Further social value activities include a fire safety training course for 6 pupils who used virtual reality to fight fires in safety. The students were very positive about their experience and enjoyed using technology to gain new knowledge.

The build covers 1250m2, provides an additional 225 places for the school and is set to be completed by April 2023.
