Green-eyed monster prompts grotto takeover

Someone has been going green with envy at how much attention Santa has been attracting at his grotto at the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare this month.

So much so, in fact, that he has organised a takeover!

He may have stolen Christmas in the book that made his name, but for one weekend, Mr Grinch is stealing Santa’s seat inside the festive grotto at the seafront attraction.

Children hoping to see Santa, in his familiar, friendly, red and white outfit when they visit the grotto this weekend (December 14 and 15) are in for a shock, as the jovial Father Christmas has been replaced by the grumpy, green, Mr Grinch.

Hollie Otley, Event Manager at the Grand Pier, said: “On his way to Whoville, Mr Grinch heard about how we have been celebrating Christmas bigger and better than ever, and was quite jealous about all the attention the grotto was getting.

“So, the green grump has hatched a plan to carry out a Grotto Takeover to try to steal our Christmas spirit by replacing Father Christmas.

“This is the perfect alternative to the traditional Santa’s Grotto for all your little mischief makers.”

Guests still get to take a trip through the snow-topped winter wonderland, but rather than end up at Santa’s Grotto, they will find themselves in Mr Grinch’s lair!

Hollie said: “Even if his heart is ‘two sizes too small’, every child will leave his lair with a Christmas gift from the mean and scheming creature.”

Tickets for the experience, which runs between 11am and 3pm on both days, cost £8. If bought online, the usual £1 Pier admission fee is included within the price, for one child and up to two adults.

The price includes the winter wonderland experience, meeting Mr Grinch, festive activities including making reindeer food and decorating gingerbread, and a wrapped gift. The ticket also includes free soft play in the Adventure Cove.

Hollie added: “This Takeover is already proving to be very popular, as it seems people are excited about the chance to keen to enjoy an alternative to the traditional grotto experience, so we would urge people to book their tickets soon to avoid any disappointment.”
