Getting ready for festive lights

Work gets under way next week to erect Christmas lights across Bath and North East Somerset.

Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Christmas lights will be installed in Bath City Centre, Combe Down, Larkhall, Weston, Keynsham, Midsomer Norton and Radstock between October 15th and 18th.

Councillor Paul Myers, cabinet member for Economic and Community Regeneration, said: “For many people the countdown to the festive season starts as soon as the Christmas lights are turned on.

“We need to ensure they are put up in good time so the work doesn’t impact other events, such as Bath’s Christmas market.

“Our contractors are part of the world’s leading festive lighting company and need to schedule the work alongside other communities across the country.  They’ll be keeping disruption to a minimum by working in the evenings.”

Hundreds of metres of cable will be installed and tens of thousands of power-saving LED lights will be used illuminate the district, including 97 lamp column mounted displays and 60 cross street displays in Bath city centre.

People will see the city lit up from 15th November to co-inside with Southgate’s enchanting winter forest and magical wardrobe installation located in the main area of the shopping centre.   It means the city will be illuminated in time for the Christmas market which runs from Thursday 22nd November to Sunday 9th December.

Keynsham’s Christmas light switch on event is being co-ordinated by the Town Council and will take place on Friday 30th November 2018.

Radstock’s lights switch on event is being organised by the Town Council for Saturday 1st December

Midsomer Norton’s Community Trust is co-ordinating with community groups for the switch on ceremony and Christmas festivities in the town, sponsored by the Town Council, on Friday 7th December in and around the Hollies Gardens.

As in previous years, Bath & North East Somerset Council is providing the Christmas Tree in Bath Abbey Churchyard and at the Hollies Garden in Midsomer Norton.
