First Class futures: former local College students become top performers at universities across the UK

Students who attend St Brendan’s Sixth Form College are more likely to achieve better results at university, compared to those who study in a sixth form at a state or independent school according to a recent report.

The report, conducted by the Sixth Form College Association, analysed university results of students from different forms of further education across the country, and found that 80.08% of students from St Brendan’s Sixth Form College achieved First Class or Upper Second Class honours (the two highest results) when graduating university last year; compared to 73.62% of students from state school sixth forms and 79.52% of students from independent school sixth forms. The report also found that of the students studying at Russell Group Universities (a group of 24 of the UK’s leading universities) 87.10% of students from St Brendan’s Sixth Form College achieved a First Class or Upper Second Class honours; 6.9% higher than those students from state school sixth forms and 5.8% higher than their peers from independent school sixth forms.

The Sixth Form Colleges Association is an organisation which represents the 90 state Sixth Form Colleges in England, and works to provide research on a range of further education issues. St Brendan’s Sixth Form College was thrilled with the outcomes of the recent research and is delighted that their students go on to achieve such fantastic results.

Michael Jaffrain, Principal commented, “I am so pleased that the hard work and time spent with our students here at St Brendan’s has such a tremendous and lasting impact upon their futures. We work to ensure all of our students who choose to go onto university after completing their studies with us, are well prepared. We like to create an environment at St Brendan’s which is both mature and supportive; providing students with enough guidance to achieve their best, but with the freedom to become independent learners and motivated young adults. I think we have struck the perfect balance here at St Brendan’s and I am delighted to be Principal of a College which shapes sixth form learners into university-ready students with a determination and proven ability to excel.”
