Children in England to be taught CPR

Children in England to be taught CPR

News today has revealed that all secondary school pupils will learn first aid and how to use a defibrillator from 2020.
Government plans state that basic lifesaving skills and health education will be provided in every secondary school meaning that all pupils will be taught how to administer CPR, the use and purpose of a defibrillator and how to give basic treatment for common injuries.

The plans are part of the Department of Education’s plans to improve health, sex and relationships teaching in the UK. The move came after the Education Secretary admitted to being stumped by the fact that American students knew CPR and he did not. The British Heart Foundation has praised the move saying it wants to improve on the less than 10% survival rate for people in the UK who have had cardiac arrests while not in hospital. In countries where CPR and other First Aid Training is part of the curriculum, survival rates for heart attacks are more than double those in the UK.

Currently the plans include secondary schools in England.
