Children and young people in care recognised at special awards ceremony

Young people of all ages came together to celebrate personal achievements as they took part in a special awards ceremony at County Hall in Trowbridge.

The event in the Atrium was an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the attainments made by children in care despite often having a difficult start in life.

Laura Mayes, Wiltshire Council outgoing cabinet member for children’s services, had asked for the event to be held to put a spotlight on the drive and determination of children and young people.

Speaking at the event she said: “One of my most important roles as cabinet member for children’s services is to make sure we support you and listen to you as you take on all the challenges of growing up in today’s world.

“Just as important to me is recognising and celebrating your unique stories and achievements as you make your mark in the world and inspire your peers.”

The awards were separated into three categories and two age ranges on the themes:

  • Community – for those who have done something to help others in the community
  • Smashed it – for those young people who have overcome significant challenges or carried out something extra special in their lives
  • Education and employment – for those young people who have made great progress in their education and those older young people who have moved into employment

Pauline Church, who will now be taking on the role of cabinet member for children, education and skills, also attended the event and presented awards to the young people.

The event was attended by representatives from the Children in Care Council (CiCC) which meets regularly to share support and ensure Wiltshire Council considers their views when looking at decisions on children and living in care. CiCC members presented Cllr Mayes with well-wishes and flowers as she moves to her new cabinet role for adult social care, public health and public protection.
