Autumnal ploughman’s sandwich
A ploughman’s sandwich is a quintessential British picnic dish: it’s easily transported, filling and tasty and is the ideal way to capture the essence of autumn. This recipe uses apple chutney to make the sandwich even more of a seasonal treat.
To make four servings of this classic British sandwich, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 4 fresh crusty bread rolls, buttered
- 140g mature cheddar cheese, grated
- 4 tablespoons apple chutney
- 4 teaspoons mustard
- 4 slices ham
- 2 large tomatoes, sliced
- 40g salad leaves
- Pepper to season
Follow the simple steps below to make this picnic staple:
- Cut the four buns in half and butter them.
- Spread a tablespoon of chutney on one side of each bread bun.
- Layer the cheddar cheese, tomato slices, salad leaves, and ham on top of this half of the bread bun and season lightly with pepper.
- Spread a teaspoon of mustard on the other sides of the bread buns and pop these slices on top of the other bread bun halves to complete the sandwich.
- Wrap the sandwiches in parchment paper or foil for easy transport.
