Autumn apple crumble bars

Apple crumble bars are a delightful treat and the perfect sweet snack to pack for your picnic. Not only are they easy to enjoy at a picnic, but they can also be eaten on the go too. These bars make for a delicious autumn dessert and use a range of seasonal flavours, including spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, and of course the classic autumnal fruit: apple.

Gather the ingredients below to make four large or six medium servings of these autumnal apple bars:

  • 150g plain flour
  • 100g oats
  • 75g brown sugar
  • 50g granulated sugar
  • 150g unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 apples, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

You can make these tasty apple treats by following the steps below:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C for fan ovens) and grease a baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, and sugar.
  3. Add the melted butter and stir until the mixture sticks together (add more butter if needed).
  4. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of the baking dish to form a base.
  5. In a separate bowl, toss the chopped apples with granulated sugar, honey, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract.
  6. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the base.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top.
  8. Bake for around 40 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Allow to cool before cutting into four large or six medium-sized bars.
