Take the ultimate swim challenge in Wiltshire Council leisure centres

Take the ultimate swim challenge in Wiltshire Council leisure centres

Take the ultimate swim challenge in Wiltshire Council leisure centres – Why not set yourself the ultimate new year’s resolution for 2018 by swimming the length of the River Thames at your local Wiltshire Council leisure centre?

The Thames, which passes through the north of the county on its way to London and the North Sea, stretches for 346km (215 miles) – or 13,760 lengths of your local pool.

To take part and successfully complete the challenge, you’ll have to swim all 13,760 lengths in 2018 – that’s an average of around 1,147 lengths a month, or 270 lengths a week, or 38 lengths a day.

The challenge is open to anyone, both members and non-members, and it’s free to take part (usual pool fees apply).

To sign up, all you have to do is visit your local Wiltshire Council leisure centre with a pool – find your nearest at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/leisure – and speak to the reception team.

Your progress will then be tracked throughout the year, and we’ll publish regular leaderboards for each leisure centre, as well as for the whole challenge.

If 13,760 lengths seems too daunting a challenge, you can still get involved – we’ll be introducing some shorter distances through the year to help swimmers of all abilities stay motivated and reach an achievable distance for them.

John Thomson, cabinet member for leisure, said: “Swimming is a great way to get active and improve your fitness and wellbeing, and this challenge offers an excellent opportunity to stay motivated next year.

“While this is a tough challenge, we know that there are many people who will be more than able to complete it. And for those who see this as a swim too far, we’re delighted to be able to offer swim challenges to suit all ages and abilities.

“I would like to wish everyone who takes part in this swim challenge the best of luck and a healthy 2018.”
