£1.8m investment in hydrotherapy pool at Selworthy School

Work has started on a new £1.8m hydrotherapy pool at Selworthy School in Taunton which will help the school meet the therapeutic needs of its most complex children.

Selworthy School is a school for children and young people with SEND (Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities) aged 4-19.

Somerset County Council is investing a total of £1,870,000 to construct the new hydrotherapy pool on the Hazelbrook Campus.

Warm water provides a good environment for children and young people with complex disabilities to benefit from activities which relieve pain, improve circulation, reduce spasms and enable a freedom of movement not possible elsewhere.

Hydrotherapy sessions can also assist in improving the movement of limbs and providing resistance to help build up strength.

Work is now underway on this exciting project and it is hoped the new build will be complete by Spring 2022.

Councillor Frances Nicholson, Somerset County Council’s Lead Member for Children’s Services said: “We are committed to providing school environments which give Somerset’s children and young people the opportunity to flourish.

“The investment in this new facility at Selworthy School is an excellent example that will have a positive impact on the physical and mental health of the pupils at the school.”

Mark Ruffett, Executive Headteacher of Selworthy School, added: “We are looking forward to these plans coming to fruition and appreciate the investment in our learners. This facility will enhance our ability to meet the needs of our population and adds a splash of excitement to our already fantastic provision.”

Nigel Whelan, Operations Manager for Devon Contractors, said: “We’re delighted to have been appointed to build the new hydrotherapy pool at Selworthy School, on the Hazelbrook Campus.

“Schools like Selworthy are truly exceptional places, providing the very best support and learning opportunities for children and young adults with special educational needs.

“The outstanding facilities in the new pool will provide a secure, innovative and exciting space for pupils and we look forward to handing over this exciting project in the not too distant future.”
