Wiltshire secondary school students continue to perform well at GCSE and A levels according to the latest government figures released today (19 January).
Two thirds (66%) of Wiltshire students achieved A*-C in both English and maths GCSEs nationally the figure was 59%. There has also been high achievement in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) which measures the proportion of pupils awarded an A*-C in core academic subjects including maths, English, science, a language, and history or geography. More than a quarter (26%) of all Wiltshire students achieved this high threshold compared to 23% nationally.
The government introduced new measures this year taking into account a wider range of results than before and focussing on both exam results and progress across a number of subjects.
Attainment 8 measures the attainment of pupils in eight GCSEs include English and maths. Wiltshire students’ Attainment 8 figure (51.4) is higher than the national of 48.5%, reflecting very good GCSE results. The Progress 8 measure shows the progress of each pupil in eight GCSEs including English and maths from the end of Key Stage 2 results at primary school to the end of Key Stage 4 when GCSEs are taken. Again Wiltshire pupils’ Progress 8 figure (0.01) is slightly higher than the national average.
Wiltshire sixth form students have also maintained high levels of achievements in their A level exams. More than 20% achieve A level grades of AAB or better and more than 10% of all students achieve three or more As in their exams.
More than 16% of students gained AAB or higher grades in at least two ‘facilitating subjects.’ These include maths, English, sciences and languages which help students compete for top university places.
The good results come as Ofsted’s recent annual report stated nearly all of Wiltshire secondary school students are in good and outstanding schools. The Ofsted report says 99% of Wiltshire secondary students are now in good and outstanding schools with this figure rising by 6% since 2015.

The Ofsted annual report states Wiltshire students are learning in good or outstanding schools which these excellent results confirm.”
