Summer Family Fun at Bishops Palace

Summer Family Fun at The Bishop’s Palace in Wells

If the thought of the long school summer holidays is filling you with dread, look no further than The Bishop’s Palace in Wells, which has a huge range of fun-filled activities on offer this year from July through to the end of August!

Kicking off with a wonderful weekend of historical re-enactment from firm favourites The Taunton Garrison on 22nd-23rd July, visitors will be treated to fully costumed troops parading their muskets around the South Lawn. This year, visitors will experience a taste of the Monmouth rebellion, when Monmouth invaded the country at Lyme Regis in 1685.

The first of the weekly Family Fun Fridays begins on Friday 28th July with a theme of ‘Glorious Gardens’ when families will be invited to join in the fun crafting activities in the Stable Yard Room. Other themes over the holidays include ‘Wacky Weather’, ‘Brilliant Bugs’, ‘Dastardly Dragons’ and ‘Crazy Castles’. Each Fun Friday runs from 10:30am-3:30pm and is included in standard admission. As these sessions are very popular, visitors will need to collect a time-slot from the Shop upon arrival.

On Sunday 6th August, the South Lawn will be given over to the annual Summer Family Fun Day with games for all ages, a bouncy castle, dressing up, face painting, crafts and activities. Bring a picnic or take advantage of the new menu in The Bishop’s Table with a range of hot and cold lunch options to keep all the family happy. Taking place from 10am-4pm, Family Fun Day is included with standard admission.

For classic family entertainment, head to the Palace on Friday 11th August for an evening of Outdoor Family Theatre with Boxtree Production’s beautiful new rendition of “Wind in the Willows”. Join Mole as he says ‘dang’ and ‘blast it!’, throws down his broom and sets off on an adventure out of his hole.  On his journey, he meets the effervescent Ratty who shows him the wonders of picnics and messing about on the river, Badger, the wise old sage of the woods and Toad of toad hall, whose exploits cause all manner of mischief and upheaval.  When the Otters and Stoats take over Toad Hall it’s up to Mole and Ratty, Badger and Toad to retake control.  With inventive staging, original songs and magical storytelling audiences are invited to enjoy this classic tale of adventure, friendship and picnics in Boxtree Production’s unique and energetic way! Just bring along a rug or low-backed seating and a picnic and you’re all set for a perfect evening.

To bring the summer holiday to a dramatic close why not visit the Palace Gardens on August Bank Holiday Weekend (26th-28th August) when Bowlore Medieval will be taking up residence! The medieval troupe will be delighting and amazing visitors with their daring archery and sword-displays. In between shows, they will also be offering visitors the chance to learn some basic archery and sword-fighting skills!
