School’s £3 million performance art and science facilities unveiled

A major new expansion to Taunton’s Heathfield School has been officially handed over to the school following the completion of a Somerset County Council multi-million project.

Pupils can now enjoy the use of two state-of-the-art performance studios and new science labs, as well as new art rooms in the two-storey building, thanks to a Somerset County Council investment of £3m.

The project means capacity at the school has been increased by 150 pupils to 1350.

The performing arts facility replaces unsuitable temporary accommodation and consists of the two purpose-built studios which have the capacity to be expanded into three performance spaces in future.

The two-storey art and science block consists of two laboratories and two classrooms on the ground floor and four art rooms on the first floor.

Contractor Halsall Construction built the new blocks and the project was managed on behalf of Somerset County Council by strategic partner Futures for Somerset Ltd.

Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Council Transformation, Councillor Faye Purbrick said: “We are delighted at the completion of these fantastic facilities at Heathfield Community School.

“Its reputation for excellence in the arts can only be enhanced by the new flexible studio space and the science labs will help ensure pupils are equipped for the growing demand for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects and related skills in the workplace.

“I’m grateful for the efforts of the contractor and everyone else who has been involved in delivering this essential project.”

Deputy Head Teacher John Fletcher added: “These state-of-the-art buildings offer superb teaching and learning environments and are of the highest quality, incorporating many innovative design features.

“It’s a fantastic example of partnership working between the school, County Council, Futures for Somerset Ltd, architects Grainge of Exeter and the contractor.”
