Reports show challenges for Universal Credit claimants

New analysis has shown that self employed workers claiming Universal Credit could receive less over a year than employees in more traditional jobs who earn the same amount.

In a new report, research has shown that thousands of self employed, agency and zero hour contract workers could be hundreds of pounds a year worse off under universal credit which is currently being rolled out across the country.

The research was taken by Citizen’s Advice, who claim that flaws in the new benefit system would mean that self employed workers, whose earnings naturally fluctuate throughout the year could receive less than employees on a consistent income. Their report says that unless the design of universal credit is updated, it risked creating further financial insecurity for workers in a non traditional working environment.

We’d love to hear from anyone who will be affected by the implementation of Universal Credit – let us know your views on Twitter and Facebook.
