Recognising the importance of local heritage

Recognising the importance of local heritage

Bath & North East Somerset Council is asking local people for their views on its plans to ensure that buildings, structures, monuments and other features which are not statutory listed, but considered locally important heritage, are recognised, looked after and taken into consideration in planning decisions.

The Council wants to identify and create a list of features which are of architectural or historic interest or make a significant contribution to the character and appearance of an area such as old signposts, World War II Pill Boxes, traditional cottages or redundant buildings.

Identifying these assets will help to maintain the distinctiveness and special qualities of Bath and North East Somerset.

Cllr Bob Goodman (Conservative, Combe Down) Cabinet Member for Developments and Neighbourhoods said: “I passionately believe in trying to preserve local structures for the future.  Once lost, many of these local assets can’t be replaced.  This extremely positive move will ensure they are preserved for the benefit of future generations. Local people will be able to nominate what they consider to be important local heritage to be included. Nominations will then be considered by the Council’s specialist Building Conservation or Archaeological Officers.”

The value of features listed will be recognised and taken into consideration when affected by development proposals.

The Council now wants to hear what local people think of its proposals which are set out in the Locally Listed Heritage Assets Supplementary Planning Document (SPD). It includes the selection criteria, the sort of information needed to be provided about the feature, how the decision to include it on the ‘local list’ will be made and how the information will be held and accessed.

You can have your say in our consultation on the Supplementary Planning Document; Locally Listed Heritage Assets until 4 June 2018, using the questionnaire available on the Council’s website;
