New Survey reveals more than a third of young people self-harm.

According to a survey commissioned by YoungMinds, Self-Harm UK and The Mix, more than a third of 16-25 year olds in Britain have self harmed at some point in their lives. Self harm is defined as someone intentionally damaging or injuring their body, which can include a wide range of behaviours.

The 1st of March, when the survey results were released, was Self-Harm Awareness Day. The three charities have provided tools and resources for parents and young people who are self harming. Help and advice can be accessed on their websites.

If a young person approaches you to tell you they are self-harming, it can be difficult to know the best course of action. YoungMinds suggests the following advice:

Don’t Panic.
It can be difficult to learn that someone you care about is self harming, but don’t panic, often simply allowing someone to open up is enough.

Offer to listen.
Without interruption or judgement, listen to what they have to say. For many people, selfharm is the only way to express very strong emotions and opening up is a huge thing, so remain calm and listen.

Help them find support.
Rather than offering advice when you’re not sure, help them find local services that can give the right help.

Be prepared to stick around.
There is very rarely a quick fix for mental health problems, so be prepared for a long journey. Most people don’t like to be defined by their problems, so continue to treat them as normal, but be aware of their situation

Look after yourself
It can be overwhelming and damaging to your own health when you feel out of your depth supporting someone else. Make sure to set boundaries if you are feeling upset yourself.
