Nearly seven thousand Health Checks and counting!

Nearly seven thousand Health Checks and counting!

Nearly 7,000 people benefitted from free health checks for the over 40s last year thanks to the service delivered for Somerset County Council and the NHS.

And the checks will continue this year, giving anyone over 40 with the chance to have a free check-up every five years, helping identify those at higher risk of certain health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease or stroke.

The current provider, ‘Thrive Tribe’, who has secured the contract to continue providing the checks, has delivered well over  6,000 since April last year, advising people on lifestyle changes, refer them to other services, and even in forty cases sent people urgently to see a GP or advised them to attend A&E.

These checks are run in community clinics in GP surgeries, pharmacies and public venues such as Libraries and Leisure Centres, as well as in workplaces, where anyone between the age of 40 and 74 can book a free health check.

During the 30-minute check, healthcare professionals assess blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and lifestyle. With these results the practitioner can advise patients about small changes that they can make which could have a huge impact on their future health.

Cllr David Fothergill, Leader of Somerset County Council said: “The NHS Health Check is an excellent service, helping to prolong and protect the lives of Somerset’s residents.

“I am delighted that Thrive Tribe will be continuing to work with us to deliver this service throughout the county. I would like to thank them for the changes that they have already made to the lives of those who have already taken up the opportunity to have a free health check.”

Andy Emerson, Thrive Tribe’s ‘Head of Service Delivery’ also added “Our team are excited to support thousands more Somerset residents to improve their health through the NHS Health Checks service. It’s a privilege to be awarded the opportunity to develop our existing NHS Health Checks provision in the county, finding ways for it to work even better for the people of Somerset.”
