Love skating? Hate cancer? Join in with this fundraiser!

Roller gang host a benefit roller disco for skater with cancer.

The Lady Roller Gang, who have been skating as a team since 2012, are hosting a fundraiser for one of their members, Kirsty, who recently had the devastating news that their cancer had returned and spread. And what do you do when you love skating but you hate cancer? You put your boots on of course, You pull those laces tight, wipe the tears from your eyes and you roll.

The roller disco aims to raise £640 to help fund alternative and supplementary treatment, so far, they have exceeded their target and hope to get as much money as possible.

Writing on their justgiving page, they said: “Kirsty has a whole lot to stick around for, of course, there’s skating and her gang, that new pair of maybe Jack Boots to mount her Mistral plate on but there’s also her two wonderful/annoyingly human and oh so young children. She also always brings the snacks so she’s a keeper. Kirsty is originally from Sunderland so we’re starting with a “Skate to Sunderland“ skate-a-thon racking up 320 miles between us with the aim of raising sponsorship to fund alternative and supplemental treatment… she’s a tenacious b**** so she’ll probably make us skate to Spain next where she spent her teenage years…”

On Friday the 6th of July, they invite you to join them for a benefit skate session. With hall hire kindly donated by the Wellsway School in Bristol and skate hire donated by Toe Jam Roller they’ll be holding a benefit roller disco between 8 and 10pm. They have live Dj’s mixing tunes to roll to and a raffle with prizes donated by Roller Girl Gang, Double Threat Skates, Press Head Cider and House of Jo amongst others. Skate hire is included in the £6 entry fee and there’ll be Marshalls on hand to get you up and rolling.

Initially starting out as just a pair that were daft enough to strap wheels to our feet when we were definitely old enough to know better, the Lady Roller Gang have grown into a team who support new and old skaters to get on their roll, offering weekly tuition, maintenance and kit advice at no profit. They meet twice a week at The Pavilion in Bath during their Roller Disco Sessions but also hire a hall once a week for a more individualised session. According to one of the team,  “The Lady bit is definitely tongue in cheek, not only because we’re probably not ladies but also because we have a very fine bunch of gentlemen who are proud to roll with us too.”
