Get Fit and Fed this summer

Get Fit and Fed this summer – Children and their families in Salisbury and Trowbridge are being given the opportunity to take part in a free programme combining sport and food during the summer holidays.

The Fit and Fed programme is available for children aged five and over and their families, and aims to encourage young people to be more active and to eat healthily. It was developed as a response to research on the inequalities of holiday hunger, isolation, and inactivity.

The free activities are visiting The Friary and Bemerton Heath in Salisbury and Studley Green in Trowbridge over the summer to help alleviate isolation and improve fitness levels during the school holidays. Young people and their families will be able to prepare a healthy hot meal, get advice on healthy eating, and have the opportunity to take part in fun games and multi sports activities.

The initiative has been developed by the sports charity StreetGames, and events in Wiltshire will be run by Wiltshire Council in partnership with Salisbury City Council, Anybody Can Cook, Tesco Farm to Fork, Active Trowbridge, Learning Curve and Selwood Housing.

John Thomson, cabinet member for leisure, said: “This is a wonderful initiative that educates families on health and wellbeing, and most importantly, it’s fun. I would encourage anyone who is looking for some extra guidance on health and fitness to join in.”

Dan Bethell, para badminton British and world number one and European champion, will be attending one of the events to inspire young people. Dan said: “I’m delighted to support this programme. I know the importance good nutrition and activity plays in my life on my pathway to the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020, so it is great this programme is helping to support families to learn new skills to balance both. I look forward to seeing people at the session in Trowbridge on 24 August.”

The programmes will take place on the following dates:

  • The Friary Community Hall, Friday 18 August and Wednesday 30 August, 10.30am-1.30pm
  • Bemerton Heath Neighbourhood Centre, Tuesday 15 August and Tuesday 22 August, 10.30am-1.30pm
  • Studley Green Primary School, Thursday 17 August and Thursday 24 August, 11am-2pm
