Drama helps Wiltshire’s young people think ahead to career choices

Drama helps Wiltshire’s young people think ahead to career choices – Young people across Wiltshire have been given career advice away from the classroom as they watched a special drama, which was performed at 20 schools in the county.

The ‘Your Choices’ performance uses drama to outline the education and training choices available to young people aged 12 to 14 years old.

The tour has been commissioned by the Careers and Enterprise Company through the Wiltshire Enterprise Adviser Network and Wiltshire Council. It complements the activities the Enterprise Adviser Network is creating by connecting local businesses and schools/colleges in the area to help raise the aspirations of young people.

The Your Choices theatre tour performed by the Solomon Theatre Company follows the journey of three young people as they make important decisions about their future. The humorous and heart-warming story features three friends who grow in confidence and find their own way through a maze of subject choices and career options. The characters give a powerful message about the importance of self-belief and finding their own individual routes to further education and employment.
Staff from the schools giving feedback said the children were “buzzing” following the performances with the shows having a good balance between humour and providing a message.

Forest Paget, director of the Solomon Theatre Company said: “Sharing success stories is a dramatic and effective way to empower students to overcome their hurdles in accessing further education and apprenticeships.”

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children said: “This is an excellent way to engage our young people to consider their future choices at a time when they are starting to consider their future careers. I’m sure these performances will have given them food for thought into what their next steps will need to be.”
