A consultation to ensure there are sufficient places for children and young people with special needs and/or disabilities into the future in the north of the county is now live.
Schools in the north of the county are already at full capacity and more space is needed as it is anticipated numbers will rise by an additional 70 places in this area alone by 2026.
Wiltshire Council is committing significant investment into the scheme to ensure pupils have schools which have sufficient space to meet their needs into the future.
People are being asked for feedback on three options:
- Develop a single school
- Develop two schools
- Develop/continue three schools in Chippenham, Trowbridge and near Devizes
The results of the consultation will go back to cabinet for any further action including the possibility of publishing statutory notices for formal consultation on any specific proposal.
Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services said: “The simple fact is our schools in the north are full and we need to invest now to ensure we have enough spaces for our pupils into the future.
“Our teachers carry out an amazing job often in very challenging conditions and we are grateful for the support and learning they provide our children and young people with special educational needs and or disabilities.
“We are poised to invest in the future of our children and young people’s education and we want to get this right for them so they can enjoy their learning in a supportive environment which helps them achieve their goals.”
