Budding Scientists and Horrible Histories at the new room on Saturday

Running as part of the National Alliance for Museums’ third annual ‘Health & Wellbeing Week,’ taking place 12-18th March, the New Room in Bristol is one of a growing number of museums nationwide that will be showcasing aspects of their work which contribute to people’s health and wellbeing.

The New Room’s ‘showcase’ day on Saturday, 17th March is aimed at families with children aged seven and over, with a hands-on workshop which children who are budding scientists or switched on by ‘Horrible Histories’ are unlikely to be able to resist.  The workshop will uncover John Wesley’s unusual methods for curing most diseases, with participants being supported to devise experiments, find cures and mix herbal remedies. They will also be shown how to use a quill and ink to write out their own fancy medicine label, which they can take home with them.

Workshops will be run on a drop-in basis, lasting an hour or two anytime throughout the day on 17th March, starting at 11 am and ending at 3 pm. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets will be available at the door or may be bought in advance from the New Room café and shop, or on Eventbrite, costing £3 per child, £6 per adult. (Eventbrite bookings incur an online booking fee.)

A special bonus for participants is that tickets for the workshop also give free entry into the New Room’s fascinating new museum which is located on the top floor of the visitor centre, as well as a free museum detective trail.

Collections manager, Kate Rogers, said: “We offer a wide range of activities all year long that meet the ‘health and wellbeing’ criteria – we see this as a very important part of what we do. Other events that take place at the New Room throughout the year which offer benefits to people’s health and wellbeing include regular craft and chat sessions, a lunchtime community choir, and Friday musical recitals – all offered free of charge – as well as a monthly folk concert. And of course, our lovely chapel is always available for people who just want a quiet space to sit, reflect or be still.”
