Awards ceremony for Healthy Schools Programme

Awards ceremony for Healthy Schools Programme

Eighteen Wiltshire schools which have gone above and beyond to improve the health and wellbeing of their pupils were recognised at a special event recently.

The ceremony at County Hall in Trowbridge follows previous events marking the Healthy Schools achievements of 11 schools from the Melksham area and five Tidworth schools, earlier this month.

At the event schools collected a special plaque marking their achievements.

The programme accredits schools that have provided evidence to show how their provision effectively supports the health and wellbeing of their pupils. Schools can work towards bronze, silver or gold levels to achieve Wiltshire Healthy Schools status. To be accredited schools need to meet a range of standards based on local and national priorities

Philip Whalley, portfolio holder for education and skills at Wiltshire Council presented certificates at the ceremony.

He said: “More than half of Wiltshire schools are now involved in this exciting programme which achieves so much for the health and wellbeing of our pupils.

“I congratulate all these schools on working so hard to achieve these awards and I’m looking forward to finding out more about the innovative approaches they have taken to gain this worthy recognition.”

Currently 77 schools have Wiltshire Healthy Schools at bronze, silver or gold level. A total of 131 schools are taking part to achieve the award.

The multiagency group granting the awards includes police, school health nurses, school representatives, Wiltshire & Swindon Sports Partnership and others. The council and agencies support the schools as they work towards the standards.

The local programme supports schools and provides information on key actions that can be taken as well as providing training. The progress of schools is monitored, including the positive impact on the health behaviours of young people.
