Art Commissions for Primary Schools

Art Commissions for Primary Schools

Foreground produce major new series of permanent art commissions for primary schools across Bristol

We are delighted to announce that Foreground is working with Bristol City Council on a series of innovative commissions in primary schools across the city.

Commissioned as part of Bristol City Council’s innovative public art programme, Art and the Public Realm Bristol, Primary/Bristol is the most extensive programme of commissioning contemporary art for school environments in the UK.

Foreground were appointed joint commissioning partner in the programme with Arnolfini, Bristol, with both organisations delivering complimentary programmes of commissioning for a wide range of primary schools across socially diverse neighbourhoods in Bristol.

Foreground’s programme extends our commitment to commissioning in the social as well as physical structures of communities into these formative educational spaces. Developed through extended development by the artists with the individual school communities, the new art works are not only an opportunity to involve artists in the design and development of primary schools, but also to explore how commissioning contemporary art for primary schools affects the social and learning ecologies of young children and their evolving attitudes to culture.

The commissions will be accompanied by events, learning and participation that will see the commissions shared beyond the schools with new and established audiences in Bristol as the programme develops.

The first three commissions produced by Foreground are works inspired by and made especially for Oasis Academy Marksbury Road, Easton CE Academy and Bishop Road School by Melanie Counsell, Olivia Plender and Heather & Ivan Morison. The artists’ commissions will be launched over the coming months.

Foreground’s 10 new commissions for Bristol primary schools will also include the first commissions for schools made by internationally renowned artists Roger Hiorns, Richard Woods and Daphne Wright.
