Should the age of consent be lowered?

Debate about the age of consent has been rife in recent weeks with France announcing plans to set its age of consent to fifteen following the public trials involving two eleven years olds in the country, after a 29 year old man was acquitted of raping an eleven year old because the courts couldn’t find any evidence of coercion.

The age of consent has been set at 16 in the UK since 1885 and Downing Street has stressed that there are no plans to change this, but a debate has been growing online, particularly among tabloid newspapers, about whether the UK should lower consent rules to fifteen, in line with France.

90% of viewers watching a Loose Women debate about the subject were against the age of consent being lowered,  do you agree? Do you think the age of consent should stay the same or should it be raised to 18 like many US states?
